Arguably the most exclusive and luxurious resort in the world, Velaa Private Island goes above and beyond to conserve the beautiful sea life that surrounds it. The Maldives is renowned for its abundance of colourful marine life and biodiversity, and Velaa has made significant contributions to this thriving underwater ecosystem through its unique coral regeneration project, one of the largest in the Indian Ocean.
Situated in the untouched Noonu atoll, Velaa is surrounded by numerous exotic dive sites featuring shark cleaning stations, dramatic swim-throughs, and elusive Eagle Rays that require protection from human activities. Over the past eight years, Velaa has transplanted over 11,000 nursery-grown corals, covering 25% of the house reef. This has led to an increase in tropical fish populations in both the transplant areas and the surrounding endangered sites. In 2023, Velaa’s team of in-house coral biologists, in collaboration with renowned scientist Tom Goreau and his team, implemented the Biorock™ project to accelerate coral growth in damaged areas and restore authentic reef habitat. Additionally, the marine team organises memorable coral adoption experiences for Velaa’s guests, creating personalised frames that serve as new shelters for fish in beautiful snorkelling areas, where guests can admire the beauty of Maldivian biodiversity.
Velaa’s project aims to raise awareness of the devastation caused to coral reefs by the severe global bleaching events of 1998 and 2016, which destroyed 60% of the Maldives’ reefs. Guests visiting one of the Maldives’ most secluded private islands can witness firsthand the remarkable results of restoration efforts and contribute to the creation of a diverse, self-sustaining ecosystem by adopting and attaching corals to the nurseries themselves, following an educational presentation with Velaa’s coral biologists. Velaa’s well-equipped dive shop offers PADI certification from beginner through to dive master levels, along with a range of Scubapro equipment to facilitate these experiences. Those seeking deeper immersion into the marine world can also sign up to shadow coral biologists for the day, collecting research data as they snorkel or scuba dive through the flourishing underwater environment.
For guests interested in learning more about ocean conservation without getting wet, Velaa Private Island offers awareness workshops focusing on topics such as sea turtle nesting and shark populations, aiming to inspire and educate both current and future generations on the importance of protecting our oceans.
With an average survival rate of 80% for transplanted corals and a capacity of nursing over 1,200 corals within the six nurseries of Velaa Private Island, the resort continues to create a thriving environment for the island’s spectacular marine life – including black and white tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, manta rays, black-spotted stingrays, and the graceful eagle ray – and will continue their outstanding efforts on this project in 2024 and beyond.

SustainabilityThe Fehikuramaa initiative, launched in 2021 as part of Velaa Private Island’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, continues to pave the way for sustainable practices in the Noonu Atoll. By focusing on the 13 local islands, the initiative recognises the symbiotic relationship between resorts and the surrounding communities, embodying Velaa owner Mr. Smejc’s commitment to providing equal care and resources to all islands in the Atoll.
2024 marked the fourth year of the Fehikuramaa initiative with its “Homemade” theme. The initiative encouraged local communities to embrace sustainability through hands-on workshops promoting waste reduction, recycling, and eco-friendly practices such as creating homemade cosmetics, cleaning products, and reusing waste materials for functional items. This theme celebrated the environmental, economic, and health benefits of crafting by hand rather than relying on manufactured products.
Velaa Private Island donated shredders to all 13 islands of Noonu Atoll as part of this year’s programme and generous donation from a guest of the island. This support reinforces the Atoll’s ongoing composting initiatives, enabling easier conversion of food waste into valuable resources. To foster awareness among children, interactive workshops focused on sustainable practices were held, nurturing the next generation’s commitment to reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Additionally, Velaa spearheaded initiatives for greener living by collaborating with councils and local businesses to introduce bulk selling systems and advocate for the farm-to-table concept. This was complemented by the distribution of greenhouses and hydroponic systems to all islands, with training provided by a local NGO. These developments aim to bolster the Atoll’s self-sufficiency in growing vegetables and herbs, marking a milestone as Noonu Atoll’s first greenhouse project comes to fruition.
A cornerstone of the 2024 Fehikuramaa initiative was its ongoing support of Manadhoo Amaan Veshi Center, a home for girls in state care established in 2022. The centre provides education, structure, and a nurturing familial environment for children from challenging backgrounds until they mature or are reintegrated with family members. While the government provides for basic needs, the centre relies heavily on donations for extracurricular activities that enrich the children's development.
This year, Velaa upgraded the centre’s meeting room to enhance its functionality and implemented an outdoor library designed as a tranquil space to foster reading and learning. These enhancements reflect Velaa’s enduring dedication to nurturing education and personal growth for the children at Manadhoo Amaan Veshi Center.
2024 also saw the Fehikuramaa initiative deepen its commitment to environmental stewardship. Building on previous successes addressing waste management and plastic pollution, this year’s efforts expanded community-driven solutions while maintaining an emphasis on education and sustainability.
“We are proud of what Fehikuramaa has achieved in its fourth year. These efforts showcase our unwavering commitment to sustainable development and our belief in creating long-lasting benefits for the communities of Noonu Atoll,” said Wayne Milgate, General Manager of Velaa Private Island.
As Fehikuramaa completes its fourth year, Velaa Private Island looks forward to continuing its legacy of meaningful contributions to the well-being and sustainability of the Noonu Atoll communities in the years to come.

Nestled within the constellation of islands that form the Noonu Atoll in Maldives, Velaa Private Island takes exclusivity to the next level with facilities and service that go beyond traditional resorts. Designed by award-winning Czech architect Petr Kolar as “an elegant fusion of Maldivian culture with contemporary luxury, intimate with Maldivian nuances”.
Velaa Private Island is the realisation of a dream to create a ‘beyond luxury’ exclusive boutique hideaway in the Maldives. Velaa means “Turtle” in the local language – named after generations of sea turtles that flock there to nest and hatch. From a broader “bird’s eye view” which greets arrivals by seaplane, the island’s exclusive over-water villas are also constructed to resemble the head of a turtle, with the island forming the body.
The resort comprises 47 private villas, houses and exclusive residences. While 18 of the 47 are built over water, the Romantic Pool Residence can only be reached by boat, allowing even more privacy and exclusivity.
SustainabilityVelaa Private Island successfully launched the 2025 edition of its flagship community programme, Fehikuramaa, focusing on
nutrition and healthy living. The initiative began with an inauguration ceremony on Landhoo Island on 1 September and will continue throughout the month with school-based sessions designed to equip children and families with practical knowledge for eating well and staying active.
This year, Fehikuramaa will be delivered across all 13 inhabited islands of Noonu Atoll for the first time in collaboration with UNFPA Maldives. The programme includes several specialists who enrich classroom content and practical sessions, while every student receives two giveaways: a nutrition-divided plate to guide healthy portions at home and a gym bag to encourage daily movement.
Mohamed Mausoom, Resident Manager of Velaa Private Island, said: “Fehikuramaa was created to meet community needs island-by-island, and this year we highlighted the everyday habits that shape lifelong wellbeing. Our aim is to empower students with simple tools and knowledge they could use immediately, at school, at home and in their
communities.”
Shadiya Ibrahim, Head of Office UNFPA Maldives, underlined the link between good health, wellbeing, and the environment: “Everyday choices in food practices and interaction with the natural surroundings determine future health outcomes.” She added that UNFPA continues to bring together partners from the private sector and technical fields to foster a more equitable and inclusive society, particularly for women and young people in island communities.
Now in its fifth year, Fehikuramaa was launched in 2021 as part of Velaa’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme to foster sustainable improvements across Noonu Atoll. Activities have been developed in partnership with local councils, schools, and community groups, reflecting the close relationship between resorts and surrounding communities.
The 2025 campaign also followed Velaa Private Island’s charitable donations of MVR 500,000 on 26 May to two national non-profits: the Cancer Society of Maldives and the Maldives Autism Association, further reinforcing the resort’s commitment to health, development, and community wellbeing nationwide.

SustainabilityThe process has been meticulously planned and has involved several pilot studies to establish a suitable methodology for the regeneration project. We opted to utilise the floating coral nursery technique due to the characteristics of the island (shallow lagoon) and environmental factors such as currents, sedimentation, and potential predators.
Currently, there is one large-scale floating nursery housing 1000 corals, along with a separate floating nursery dedicated to coral adoption, allowing guests to participate. Additionally, there are five small-scale reef nurseries. The initial stage of the regeneration process involves attaching fragmented or broken coral to ropes, which are then left to float in the vicinity of the nursery. After approximately nine months in the nursery, protected from predators, the coral will thrive and grow, reaching a size suitable for transplantation onto the house reef. Transplantation marks the second phase of the project, wherein coral is carefully moved to areas with existing healthy coral, where favourable survival and growth conditions exist.
The introduction of the Biorock™ project, which employs electrified steel structures to stimulate coral growth using safe low-voltage electricity, has further enhanced survival rates and increased species diversity. Moreover, it has accelerated growth rates by up to tenfold. Corals planted on Biorock™ structures have a greater chance of withstanding future predicted bleaching events.
The Maldives boasts approximately 1,200 islands, each encircled by coral reefs, rendering it one of the premier destinations globally for snorkelling and diving due to its marine biodiversity and abundance.
Global warming stands as the foremost threat to coral populations in the Maldives. Corals are exceedingly sensitive to environmental changes, particularly fluctuations in temperature. Following the significant bleaching event of 1998, corals were in the process of recovery when they faced another natural phenomenon in 2016—El Niño—along with another in 2020, resulting in mass bleaching without mortality. The El Niño effect entails prolonged periods of elevated sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, exacerbated by global warming. The 2016 phenomenon led to a staggering 60% reduction in average coral cover, subsequently impacting fish abundance and diversity.
The onset of the fourth global mass bleaching event has been catalysed by extraordinary ocean temperatures, spelling dire consequences for marine life and the millions of people reliant upon it. With global temperatures on the rise, such events are anticipated to occur more frequently and persist for longer durations.
Anthropogenic activities also pose a threat to corals, notably pollution and overfishing. Annually, millions of tonnes of plastic waste infiltrate our oceans, persisting for centuries and disintegrating into microplastics. Marine organisms ingest these microplastics, which have been detected in seafood consumed by humans, potentially introducing harmful chemicals and toxins into our food chain. Larger plastic debris ensnares marine life, inflicting injuries and disrupting ecosystems, with ramifications for biodiversity and the planet’s health. The economic ramifications of plastic pollution are substantial.
Through the implementation of innovative strategies such as the Biorock™ project, the establishment of small-scale nurseries, and the direct transplanting of fragmented coral species, remarkable progress has been made in enhancing the genetic diversity of our coral reef. Diverse species including Pocillopora, Acropora, Heliopora, Pachyseris, Diploastrea, Astreopora, alongside numerous other massive species, now contribute to our ecosystem.
We also developed a method to grow soft corals, followed by transplantation, after two weeks, back onto the reef. We add anemones to our Biorock™ structures which attract clownfish, damselfish, as well as different species of invertebrates.
We conduct benthic, fish and invertebrate surveys of our coral transplanted area, which we compare with results from a degraded area and our Biorock™ site. The Biorock™ site exhibited the highest levels of abundance, closely followed by transplant sites, while degraded areas exhibited comparatively lower levels of biodiversity.
In addition, we have a long-term time-lapse monitoring in place, which takes 340+ photos over a 10-day time-lapse, which we use to track long-term changes in our Biorock™ sites, as well as weekly remote underwater video where the abundance and diversity of fish are monitored.
Every species in an ecosystem interacts, each taking different roles and none more important than another. This has inspired a shift in the focus of our coral regeneration project, which now primarily aims to increase the diversity of coral to build a reef with more complexity, eventually encouraging increased fish diversity.
Our guests can contribute to the project by adopting corals. They are invited to view an educational presentation about marine life and the reef ecosystem, highlighting the importance of its protection.
After the presentation, the marine team helps our guests to attach and monitor corals on the rope. Guided by the dedicated team, guests can also put their corals on the nursery via scuba diving or snorkelling. We then provide them with a certification of adoption and update them on the health of their adopted coral ongoing once they’ve returned home.
Youngsters can get involved in our Young Marine Biologist Programme, which is in collaboration with the Kids Club. There are four weekly activities, and they can gain hands-on experience on various topics including coral transplanting, turtle nesting, lab science and identifying different species of fish.
Another activity offered to our guests is to be a part of the marine team for a day. They are invited to shadow the coral biologists who live on the island while they snorkel or scuba dive to collect research.
We also provide awareness-raising workshops focused on shark population, sea turtle nesting or plastic pollution impact on local marine life. The end goal is to inspire more guests to get involved in ocean protection and conservation, with a view to spreading awareness and finding solutions to preserve the biodiversity which is drastically decreasing every year.
Velaa Private Island is working in cooperation with the Olive Ridley Project and Manta Trust. Anytime there is an encounter with manta rays or turtles on the house reef or an island nearby, we transfer the information and pictures to the relevant organisations for identification. In the past year, we have identified ten turtle individuals, and 11 mantas, including three individuals never recorded before, that we were able to name. If the team encounters and rescues any entangled or injured turtles, we cooperate with veterinarians from Marine Savers or Atoll Marine centre.
Velaa translates as green turtle in Dhivehi (Maldivian language) because female sea turtles typically nest on the island during the nesting season, between March and August. The nesting process requires a lot of energy from the females travelling to the island, so we try to make it less stressful for them in order to increase the nesting success rate.
We will expand our Biorock™ project, putting a new system in a different location of the island. This will rejuvenate the degraded reef, fostering the growth of coral communities, enhancing biodiversity, and providing crucial habitats for marine life. In addition, Biorock™ will contribute to shoreline protection, mitigating coastal erosion and safeguarding the island’s ecosystems against the impacts of climate change.
The aim of the project is not only to help regenerate the reef but to spread awareness in terms of the impact we have on the ocean. We conduct sessions for our resort guests, employees as well as working with the local community to help educate them on the coral reef ecosystem and explain it is important to protect it for the future. In 2023, we joined two environmental Festivals organised by local islands to provide awareness about Plastic pollution. We participated in the Little Big Festival in Kudafaree, Noonu Atoll and Turtle Festival in Lhaviyani Atoll, which both help increase community understanding of sustainability principles.
